New York’s Other Chinatown

Flushing is a neighborhood in Queens NYC that very few people know about. Most people happen to stumble into Flushing either to visit someone who lives here, to enjoy some of the delicious food or simply because they fell asleep on the 7 train and ended up on the last stop. Flushing is not only populated by Chinese families but also Korean and the latest addition to this melting pot are Hispanics. There happens to be a Starbucks in Flushing that sells many different tea flavors, which you would never see in an average Starbucks.

More recently, a new breed of tea stores has popped up, they are the bubble tea cafes. For those of you who don’t know, bubble teas come in multiple flavors including strawberry, green apple, passion fruit, mango, lemon, watermelon, grape, lychee, peach, pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew, banana, avocado, coconut, kiwi, and jackfruit. Other popular non-fruit flavors include taro, green tea, pudding, chocolate, coffee, mocha, barley, sesame, almond, ginger, lavender, rose, caramel and violet. Not only can you choose any of these flavors but you can also decide whether you would like to add tapioca bubbles or jelly cubes. They come in large plastic containers, much like a frozen latte, but what makes them unique is the oversized thickness of the straw. The straws are designed to allow the tapioca or jelly cubes to pass through the straw and into your mouth. Yum!

If one day you find yourself on the last stop of the seven train in NYC don’t be afraid to leave the station and enjoy one of these delicious teas :).
