Observation Towers

Good morning everyone!

I hope you had a great weekend :)! This weekend we did a shoot at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, but this time we focused on the Observation Towers. If any of you have watched the original Men in Black movie, you might recognize these towers. I’ve seen these towers all my life and never bothered to find out what their original purpose was until today.

Apparently, they were observation towers used during the 1964 World’s Fair to view mankind’s greatest achievements. The theme for this world fair was Peace Through Understanding and mostly focused on American culture and technology.  Surrounding the towers were many pavilions, often shaped like the products they were promoting. During this world fair, the public was introduced to mainframe computers, computer terminals with keyboards and CRT displays, Teletype machines, punch cards, and telephone modems. These pavilions are long gone and these towers along with the Unisphere and a few other structures are all that remain.
